Witches of the Week #7: Saint Agnes

1- Where is the band from and what's the best thing to do there?

We’re from east london and the best thing to do is start a band because there is nothing else to do here to be honest unless you like drinking massively overpriced shitty cocktails. Actually Jack the Ripper tours of Whitechapel are quite good too to be fair.

2- What does your name stand for and what was the runner up?

We started the band on the eve of Saint Agnes. Traditionally the eve of st agnes is a night where young girls perform certain rituals before sleeping so that their future husband shows up in their dreams and they can see what he’s gonna look like. I did this and dreamed of a stack of Marshall amplifiers so loud that they tore the very seams of the physical world apart, eardrums exploding, volcanoes erupting etc and I think that explains a lot to be honest.

Runners up include: Lumpy Addams, Jimbo Jones and Cat Sick. All names over which I am claiming copyright right now because I think they are fantastic.

3- Describe your sound using a movie title.

There Will Be Blood.

4- Describe each band member using a meal.

Kitty - barbecued steak, black and blue (divisive, delicious)

Jon - curry (reliable, delicious)

Ben - pork scratchings (weird, delicious)

Andrew - chips and curry sauce (easy going, delicious)

5- Name 3 bands who would headline your dream fest?

Nine Inch Nails, Pj Harvey, Ho99o9

6- For or not being described as "female fronted"?

Not, no, never. Apart from anything else it makes no sense. Being a woman isn’t a genre, it describes nothing about the music.

7- Are you signed on a label and why?

No, we release everything through our own label Death or Glory Gang records. It was a decision we made very early on, our vision for the band is strong and we struggle to cede control over even the smallest of details. That is not to say that we aren’t open to it in the future but it would take finding the perfect person and situation to work with.

8- What's the most punk thing you've seen on tour/in a show?

We played a show in Germany last year where a dad had brought his son who had down’s syndrome right to the front of the barrier. This kid was so into the music and rocking out so hard, i’ve never seen somebody give themselves over to music and the moment so completely in my life. Jon gave him his guitar to play mid song and he absolutely let loose on it, a glorious cacophony of feedback. That was punk as fuck. What’s more punk than losing yourself in the riff really?

9- Best quarantine activities?

Writing songs of course. It’s also nice to have more time to dedicate to seeking out the dark forces and joining their hellish crusade/learning to make fresh pasta.

10- What's the best way to support your band?

Talk to people about us, convert your loved ones, spread the gospel of agnes.

Interview w/ Jennifer "JJ" Leigh ( THE DEVOTCHKAS)

In 1996, three girls from New-York got together to form The Devotchkas . A band that would go on to become one of the most talked about all-girl oï punk of the scene at the time. A time that was long before smartphones and social media, when bands only had web pages on Geocities and Angelfire, which is where we first heard about them. Because in 2001, after Jennifer Leigh, (better known has JJ ) took vocal duties, the band released an iconic album, that was not only our introduction to them, but to how much ass a women can kick when they play badass music. The next year they went on hiatus, and we never heard about them. The whole industry evolved, but for us they remained legendary in their own way.  Fast foward 20 years later, the same line-up that released that iconic album, decided it was time to get back in action. This weekend, the gang is set to play at the C.Y. Fest in Los Angeles, not once, but twice, and even though we can't attend, we couldn't be more exited at the i...

THE PHOTO PASS with MIHAELA PETRESCU

When did you first pick up a camera and what motivated you to start photography? I picked up a camera at around 4 years old. My mom did some photography when i was young, so I grew up with a camera in my hands. Did you study or are you self taught? I studied in cinema/video/communications at Dawson College, then I went to Concordia University in the same field. I never actually studied photography but I had a lot of photo classes. Do you remember the first show you ever shot and how it went? My uncle played in bands since I was really young. The first show I shot was my uncle's first show with his new band. I was around 13 years old. The stress was real! I think I had one of those point and shoot cameras. I also remember my first show for a media; it was Septicflesh at Café Campus. How did you know you wanted to do concert photography and what do you love the most about it? The first concert I ever saw was of Cher . I was maybe 8 or 9 years old and I vividly remember watching the ...
