2020: HEAR THEM ROAR

Band: Dream Nails / Photographer: Jeroen Jacobs

The year 2020 was probably off to a good start for many of us. The prospect of new music, new shows, new ways to kick doors down and share art that means a lot to us, was promising once again. Then, around mid march, it all came to a stop. The whole industry was placed on hold while new ways of doing things were put in place to take care of everyone around us. It didn't stop us from being heard though. It didn't take long for independant medias and artists to get the ball rolling again. After all, most of us have been doing it ourselves for so long. We were up for the challenge.

Eventually new music was recorded, virtual events became a thing, and through online communities, voices have been heard. We are proud to say that it ended up being a good year for women and marginalized artists. We have discovered so many great bands, have seen so many amazing events being organized, and most of all, we've seen all of you getting together to fight sexism, racism, and abuse, through words and music.

To help us discover as many artists as possible, we've decided to come up with our own 2020 recap, where we let artists that we love, tell us about the best music and virtual events, that they have experienced this year.

Hear them roar.

FRANKIE AND THE STUDS

TOP 5 ALBUMS/EPS/DEMOS OF THE YEAR:

I had really high hopes for this year just in anticipation of some of my favorite bands releasing new music and hoping to catch them on tour; however, despite shows being cancelled, I'm thankful for these releases that helped me get through a tough year.

Hayley Williams - Petals For Armor
The Strokes - The New Abnormal
Green Day - Father of All Motherfuckers
Viagra Boys - Ain't Nice (single)
PUP - This Place Sucks Ass (EP)

BEST SHOW/VIRTUAL EVENT OF 2020:

The Distillers did a Halloween Livestream event that was accessible to members of their fan club, so I joined their fan club and got some rad merch and the livestream was awesome and sounded great. I actually think the Distillers was one of the last live shows I saw in person too.

YUR MUM

TOP 5 ALBUMS/EPS/DEMOS OF THE YEAR:

In no particular Order:

Healthy Junkies - Forever on the Road album / This band has been on the road for a while and keeps surprising with their integrity and hard work. Great people, true rock and rollers.

Sadness & Complete Disappointment - Status / New band with 2 members of Screech Bats band. Great comeback, great tune.

Tarah Who? - Numb Killer Single/ All songs are absolutely great, sharing the stage with them is great, touring with them is great...I guess I like them a lot! But if we are talking 2020, this is the single.

Mr. Bungle - The Raging Wrath Of the Easter Bunny Demo

Frauds - Copenhagen single.

BEST SHOW/VIRTUAL EVENT OF 2020:

Best show, was the one we've played in February before all this pandemic nightmare at the Dublin Castle venue in London with Healthy Junkies, Tokyo Taboo and Run Into the Night. Great energy from the audience and bands involved. An absolute all around great night not to be forgotten!
The Best Virtual event was the Punk and Roll Rendezvous Festival 2020. We've had the pleasure to take part in this live event recorded and streamed. What a blast and a bit of a live event fix.

HOW CAN WE SUPPORT YOUR BAND?

By doing things like this! :)
We strongly believe the word to mouth is the best promotion, and we are a live band, so playing gigs, festivals, house parties...you name it, we love it. Who knows...maybe we are lucky enough to meet you all in person in a great Canadian adventure!

VIBORAS

By Irene, singer/guitarist

TOP 5 ALBUMS/EPS/DEMOS OF THE YEAR:

Here they are, in no particular order!

DeeCracks - ...Can't Get It Right EP
Tim Armstrong - Life's For Living EP (this was released to raise funds for one of our hospitals during the pandemic️)
Andead - Old But Gold EP
Viboras - Rockers United EP (this one bears our name but there's no false modesty here: we barely played and sang in it, it was completely recorded in lockdown and features 42 italian punk rock artists in total all united to raise funds for a Plan International mission to support children against Covid-19 in underprivileged communities around the world)
Aurevoir Sofia - Wither

BEST SHOW/VIRTUAL EVENT OF 2020:

That must be Punk Rock Raduno! Probably the only festival they managed to do here in Italy despite the partial-lockdown situation, it was also streamed live

HOW CAN WE SUPPORT YOUR BAND?

We really appreciate socials and the people following and liking and then listening to our songs on spotify with their airpods but the most important part is sharing our songs with others!
So listen with your friends, put an album on while traveling in the car and maybe even burn yourself or buy a CD and SHARE

TARAH WHO?

TOP 5 ALBUMS/EPS/DEMOS OF THE YEAR:

Tarah G. Carpenter:
Ouch! This is going to sound terrible but i don’t really have an
answer ? I have been writing for this new album and when i write, i avoid listening to
music, especially genres we may sound like. Trying to avoid to get too influenced during
the writing process...

-HOWEVER, i was really excited to hear that the Chicks (aka Dixie Chicks) have released
a new album after 14 FN years!!! And i really enjoyed listening to their brand new album
and its productions is per the usual very very good! So i guess that is one!

-Alanis has released a new album and i really enjoy “The reasons i drink”. I also love the
fact that Alanis wanted to work with female producers on that album.

-“Exposed” our 2020 demo for our upcoming release.. does that count? i am really
satisfied with the result so far. I started writing during covid and it was really difficult to
work through Zoom with Coralie and Jason Orme, our producer but we did it! Doing it!

-Our unconditional soul band-mates YUR MUM, have been writing and recording a new
ep. I have heard some of it online and it is pretty rockin’! Can’t wait to hear the final
product!

Coralie Hervé:
Nightwish : Human Nature, Ad Infinitum,
Unleashed The Archers : Abyss
My love for the duo BALA never ceases! I think they have sthg new coming up actually
but i especially wanted to drop their name because people should know about them! They
are phenomenal, most definitely a band crush for me. Love their sound and energy and i m
DYING to make a tour happen with Tarah Who?, Yur Mum and Bala. I mean ?￰ 2021?

BEST SHOW/VIRTUAL EVENT OF 2020:

Tarah G. Carpenter: i really enjoyed watching Yur Mum’s live show in London. It takes
some balls to put on a show in front of no one and watching them was fun and it really felt
like i was there with them. They really managed to keep it interesting. I think it s on their
youtube. When big names drop a live show, they get a lot of support. Which is awesome
but it s really hard for independent bands to keep their activity up and still try to build or
grow a fanbase. Especially loud rock n roll. When you need to FEEL the music and
passion aka anger!

Coralie Hervé: Ad Infinitum - Live in Cologne

HOW CAN WE SUPPORT YOUR BAND?

Tarah G. Carpenter: follow us on Instagram, get in touch, play our music to your friends
who may like it too. Spread the word out:)

I didn’t watch any virtual shows this year, but I did participate in Punk Rock Bowling’s online festival called “Locked In & Stripped Down” which was really cool!

HOW CAN WE SUPPORT YOUR BAND?

I am releasing 13 new songs in 2021 under the name Suzi Moon, you can keep up with me at www.suzimoon.com

SPAREPARTSFORBROKENHEARTS

By Sarah Green, singer/guitarist

TOP 5 ALBUMS/EPS/DEMOS OF THE YEAR:

2. Marmozets- "The Weird And Wonderful Marmozets"
3. Lil Peep- "Come Over When You're Sober, Pt. 2
4. Joji- "Nectar

GIRLS LIKE US

TOP 5 ALBUMS/EPS/DEMOS OF THE YEAR:

Band answer: Amelia / Lauren / Blue Geen

Best release this year has gotta be Maid Of Ace’s new album live fast or die.

Riviera Kid’s “Stay positive” is also up there as well as our friends in Spit Sisters who released a few banging singles.

BEST SHOW/VIRTUAL EVENT OF 2020:

Band answer: Amelia / Lauren / Blue Geen

BooTV playing with YurMum, Pollypikpocketz, Tiffany Twisted & Elta Waves. Despite us playing it, it’s also the only live stream any of us have actually been able to catch up with! Despite being crazy rusty not seeing or playing with each other for 8 months because of the lockdown, it was still a fun night & great to catch up with everyone.

HOW CAN WE SUPPORT YOUR BAND?

Amelias answer :

The best way to support our band and just the music scene in general is to turn up to shows, stream the music, buy the merch & spread the word. 2020 has been a rough year for bands and the scene everywhere so even sharing your pals music page is a massive help.

THE BLOODIES

TOP 5 ALBUMS/EPS/DEMOS OF THE YEAR:

1) The Personas' 'Perspective': another Minneapolis band, their album came out this year but it feels like forever ago. We played the EP release show with them right before the pandemic hit and the memories of that show have sustained us through the drought that followed
2) Youth Code's 'Puzzle': A fan recommended this band to us and HOLY HELL are they great. We can't wait for shows to come back so we can catch their act live.
3) Miley Cyrus's 'Plastic Hearts: Say what you will, she added some interesting depth to her cover of Heart of Glass and overall has evolved her sound.
4) Matt Berninger's 'Serpentine Prison': If you love the National, check out Matt's recent solo album. His voice is pretty iconic.
5) Radical Operations' 'Totally Fucked Demos': An underground punk band from Buffalo NY, we were in talks to tour with them across New York State this Fall but of course those plans are on hold.

BEST SHOW/VIRTUAL EVENT OF 2020:

Melodic Noise, an online music blog, has been running virtual shows once a month and they've all been really solid. We were in conversation to host December's virtual show, but a recent lockdown has pushed that back to January.

HOW CAN WE SUPPORT YOUR BAND?

Give us a listen on Spotify or Bandcamp, and send us a DM letting us know which tracks you dig! We're really solidifying our sound, but without live shows, it's really hard to gauge which songs are crowd favorites (and conversely, which songs don't make the cut). If you could give us a like or follow on social media, that'd be dope too :)

XTINE AND THE RECKLESS HEARTS

TOP 5 ALBUMS/EPS/DEMOS OF THE YEAR:

This is actually a hard one. We haven’t all been listening to much new music in a while. But this year did bring out some pretty rad new artist. So here’s a list of a little old and some new music we have been really diggin’ this 2020.

Xtine’s pick
I love fierce badass women in rock and these two artist are two I found this year and just can’t get enough of!
1- Nova Twins- Who are the girls
2- Delilah Bon- Bad Attitude

CeCe’s pick
3- Mother- In this Moment
4- Pantera- Cowboys from Hell

Rie Ali’s pick
5- Ganser- look at the sky (shout out to Chicago’s music scene killing it as always)
6- Public Practice- Gentle Grip

Jett’s pick
7- Dead Sara- Hands Up
8- Crown Valley- Gaslighting

BEST SHOW/VIRTUAL EVENT OF 2020:

Best Virtual Show: Gritty in Pink
It’s a community and monthly event empowering women in music from all over.
Instagram: @grittyinpinklife

HOW CAN WE SUPPORT YOUR BAND?

You can support our band by sharing our post, liking our pages and spreading our name! We have not released any music(2021) yet so it’s a struggle building a base on shows alone and now with the virus making all live shows cancelled/postponed even harder. So we could really use all the help sharing our pages, sharing our post/stories etc... helping build our fanbase so we can eventually share the amazing music and things we have been up to and making.

ARXX

TOP 5 ALBUMS/EPS/DEMOS OF THE YEAR:

- Haim - Women In Music Part 3
- Pillow Queens - In Waiting
- CLT DRP - Without The eyes
- LIME - Fever
- Dream Wife - So When You Gonna

BEST SHOW/VIRTUAL EVENT OF 2020:

We put on a Streaming festival this year, called "coming out staying in" to raise money for All Sorts and LGBTQ+ Youth Projects. All the bands were amazing but Sylvia Mwenze's set was definitely one of our favourites.
In terms of gigs that we played, our favourite was a gig with Big Joanie and Pink Suits ( Both great bands you should check out!) that we played in Folkestone. The venue and crowd were both amazing.

LADY BITS

TOP 5 ALBUMS/EPS/DEMOS OF THE YEAR:

1. "Signal" by Automatic - this record is perfect for walking or driving around late at night with your face half-obscured by a mask. It's a secret moody soundtrack for your ears only.
2. "Hunger for a Way Out" by Sweeping Promises - killer bass, alternating delicate/powerful vocals, and songs that you don't mind getting stuck in your head
3. "Cha Cha Palace" by Angelica Garcia - who can argue with bold blue eyeshadow and danceable witchy anthems?
4. "All of Nothing" by Shopping - funky bass lines and riffs with hypnotic vocals - dance-punk done right.
5. "Petals for Armor" by Hayley Williams

BEST SHOW/VIRTUAL EVENT OF 2020:

Krishanti - Control Top at Union Pool in Brooklyn, NY in March. They kicked off their tour right before the pandemic, and had to cancel most of the dates unfortunately. The show was packed and electric, and you were constantly running into people you knew. I love that about Brooklyn shows. They released my favorite album of 2019 - it's a must listen. That night is a really fond memory I've been holding on to throughout the year as I miss shows so much.

Emma - A venue we’ve played at called the Footlight is doing a cool live (audience-free) series called “FLTV” featuring local bands.

Adriana - Haven't had the patience to watch much Instagram Live stuff but I caught a couple of Mirah's Thursday night sets, which were so like her IRL sets—intimate and nostalgic.

HOW CAN WE SUPPORT YOUR BAND?

Listen to our music! We just released a new record on Bandcamp this month called "Lose the Thread." Stylistically, we're exploring new genres and vocal patterns, and this album is deeply thematic around how time moves slowly and quickly. You can stream it here: https://lady-bits.bandcamp.com/

THE RAMONAS

TOP 5 ALBUMS/EPS/DEMOS OF THE YEAR:

Cam-
1. Thundercat - It Is What It Is
2. Tom Misch & Yussef Dayes - What Kinda Music
3. The Physics House Band - Live at Metropolis
4. The Strokes - The New Abnormal
5. Idles - Ultra Mono

Vicky -
grasshopper - Scuttle
IDLES - Ultra Mono
System of a Down - Protect The Land / Genocidal Humanoidz (single)
Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazelwood - Some Velvet Morning / Tired of Waiting for You (2020 single re release)
Tame Impala - The Slow Rush

Max- I've been mostly listening to older stuff this year. Two new amazing albums released this year though:
Jon Gomm- The Faintest Idea
Maid Of Ace- Live Fast Or Die

BEST SHOW/VIRTUAL EVENT OF 2020:

Cam - Dropkick Murphys on St Paddy’s Day was pretty cool and Orange Is The New Black Color of Change in June for BLM was amazing

Vicky - I’ve really been enjoying Suzi Quatro’s series of videos about her bass parts and songs. Matt Freeman of Rancid also did a similar thing which was amazing to watch. It’s something I would have loved to have had easy access to when I was a teenager learning bass, it’s definitely one of the better things to have happened in 2020.

Max- Rebellion had some awesome bands play. I distinctly remember loving Wonk Unit's and Svetlana's sets.

HOW CAN WE SUPPORT YOUR BAND?

Cam - we have a lot of our own music available on Big Cartel and Band Camp if you would be so kind as to check us out! :)

Vicky - Check out our website www.ramonas.co.uk, we also have some free downloads at www.theramonas.bandcamp.com.

VIAL

By Taylor Kraemer (she/her)

TOP 5 ALBUMS/EPS/DEMOS OF THE YEAR:

All of Taylor Swift's albums this year have been so life-changing. She is so innovative and is always changing the game. My band has been on a singles kick over the past year, too, notably loving "i'm gonna tell my therapist on you" by Pinkshift and "Good Girls (Don't Get Used)" by Beach Bunny.

BEST SHOW/VIRTUAL EVENT OF 2020:

My favorite show/virtual event has been the Prince Daddy and the Hyena live stream on The Alternative's Twitch stream or the Summit Shack's Fourchella "Minechella" festival on Minecraft, live-streamed on their Twitch account! We played both lineups and they were an absolute blast.

HOW CAN WE SUPPORT YOUR BAND?

You can support VIAL by keeping an eye out for future (And very soon upcoming) announcements in regards to our newest record! :)

HOW CAN WE SUPPORT YOUR BAND?

Be gay, do Crime. You can support our music by spreading it to your friends and “Sown” is also available on 12” vinyl to order from our Bandcamp, or from any of the labels helping us to release it. We are currently finishing writing LP2 and have 18 fresh new songs that we hope to finish up and record once the situation with Covid 19 is getting more stable. It is also important to support all your local venues and concert halls, many of these important places are facing big economic struggles and need your help so that they won’t have to be shut down, because we would very much like somewhere to actually play once its possible to tour again.

Lastly, as a band with transgender people we want to encourage everyone to please donate to any of these important organizations that helps transpeople with all different kinds of projects.
Trans Women of Color Collective, Mermaids, Transgender Legal Defence and Education Fund, The Trevor project, Trans Lifeline, National Center For Transgender Equality, The Sylvia Rivera Project.

BEST SHOW/VIRTUAL EVENT OF 2020:

Bea:
Storm{O} @ CsoPedro Padova (Italy) in January
I took a flight to go back to Italy only to see this band and it was the best decision to make considering how 2020 went afterwards.
It was in one of my favourite venues close to where I used to live back in Italy and I just completely released in the pit that night. The atmosphere was amazing and I love supporting the Italian hardcore scene.

Salome: I didn't get to see many gigs this year but I know Dreamnails organised a sick virtual event "Feministmas" and I believe Jawless did one as well.

Raquel:
DISFEAR gig in London back in March.
It was a blast full of energy, it was also the last live gig I attended and had the honour play (with my band SūRYA) this year

HOW CAN WE SUPPORT YOUR BAND?

Come to our gigs and get some Merch. But since gigs are not gonna be posible for a while get some of our Merch online so we can record an album soon!

SPIT SISTERS

By Jaz, singer/guitarist

TOP 5 ALBUMS/EPS/DEMOS OF THE YEAR:

In no particular order...

Tamesis by Tamesis - EP
Tamesis is our sister-band! (As in, Sara also plays drums with them!) Their songs are gorgeously witchy and I can’t help picturing them traveling back in time to play at The Bronze in Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

But It’s Fine by Jeerleader - EP
Brilliantly witty lyrics to dance-able guitar pop, this all-girl band was the soundtrack to my 2020 Summer.

Sun Racket by Throwing Muses - Album
Can you believe they’ve been around since the late ‘80s? This album was a welcome surprise from the awesome band that gave us bangers like Snakeface and Bright Yellow Gun.

Zelda by The Sewer Cats - Album
Best debut album this year has seen! We hope to see them live ASAP… maybe even play a show with them? ;)

Let’s Do it / The Rest by Berlin Blonde - EP
We met these guys as they were on the same bill as us at a gig early this year, they were super nice and this EP is a bop! Reminiscent of Violent Femmes, Talking Heads, and early Beatles IMHO.

BEST SHOW/VIRTUAL EVENT OF 2020:

Is it too cheeky to say one we played at? It was just an amazing night! We held it in a back garden in the lull between lockdowns and it was honestly so much fun - like a mini-festival just with the other bands and some plus 1s. The first band was David Bowie tribute act Cats From Japan, second was Tamesis, third was us and last on were these truly bonkers (in the best way) punk-warriors that go by Menopause Army!

We called the event ‘ Post-Apocalyptic Garden Party’ and the video of the stream is available to watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCEualsT2ro&t=9274s&ab_channel=GardenGig

HOW CAN WE SUPPORT YOUR BAND?

You can support us by following us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter - whatever it is you use.

And also by following on Bandcamp and purchasing our music + we have some cool patches for sale on there, too: https://spitsisters.bandcamp.com/

Any funds we raise will go towards funding an album we hope to release maybe next year, so watch this space!

Visit https://www.spitsisters.co.uk/ to keep up with everything Spit Sisters :)

THE MENSTRUAL CRAMPS

By A.J., drums

TOP 5 ALBUMS/EPS/DEMOS OF THE YEAR:

In no order, because they are all great! I think I have gone through a phase of only listening to that album/songs for a whole day at a time repeatedly throughout the year.

Nova Twins - Who Are The Girls?
Every time I Die - A Colossal Wreck // Desperate Pleasures
War On Women - Wonderful Hell
Poppy - I Disagree
Hayley Williams - Petals For Armor

BEST SHOW/VIRTUAL EVENT OF 2020:

Emilia and I watched the Billie Ellish 'Where Do We Go?" stream with our partners at my apartment back in October. We went splits with the ticket price and took the opportunity to dress up as Billie. I think visually it was really incredible what they did with this 3D green screen and how they did it. The chat window made the show lag like crazy at the start, which was equally frustrating and funny, but we just watched it through again after it finished.
Although the pandemic and restrictions really suck for bands and artists, I think it has also pushed everyone to try to make things more accessible. Billies show was a really great example of how technology has really helped with creating shows and at such a large scale. I think live stream shows will continue even when things (if they can) go back to "normal". I have a few more live stream shows lined up to watch (The Distillers & Every Time I Die)

HOW CAN WE SUPPORT YOUR BAND?

Good Question! Aside from the usual buying merch, and streaming songs....
You can follow us on socials, and check that notifications are enabled.
It sounds cringe, but platforms like Facebook and Instagram really restrict our reach of posts (even to our fans, in hopes that we will pay to promote our own posts)
As a DIY band, we can't afford to pump money into adverts!
We currently have the difficult task of looking for new members between lockdowns and restrictions, and then we will be writing new material. So if we have anything to shout about or share in the meantime it will be on there!

BABY SHAKES

TOP 5 ALBUMS/EPS/DEMOS OF THE YEAR:

In no particular order here are the top 5 albums/releases of 2020:

We know tons of other bands/venues are struggling right now, so the best way to support is to buy merch and buy music. If you don’t have the funds, sharing and streaming music with others definitely helps (Bandcamp, Apple music, Spotify etc).

We have records/merch for sale at www.babyshakes.com in the US and in the U.K./Europe from:

HOW CAN WE SUPPORT YOUR BAND?

THE AQUADOLLS

By Melissa

TOP 5 ALBUMS/EPS/DEMOS OF THE YEAR:

1. How I'm Feeling Now - Charli XCX
I've been a huge Charli XCX fan for years, but this album was publically created over quarantine. She was posting the album progress online, doing livestreams and zoom calls showing her process, which I found very fascinating and inspiring! This body of work has a feeling of nostalgia for the beginning part of when lockdown began. This album helped inspire me to work on music production at home and led me to release my first solo music drops. I also had the pleasure of remixing "Claws", since she posted the album stems online. I wish more artists would post stems like that. So awesome. I also covered "Party4u" with the help of Tiktok producer Robert Lilly, which was so fun to work on!
Favorite track: Party4u

2. Food House - Foodhouse, Gupi, Fraxiom
This album is just amazing. There is not a single skip track. When I'm feeling down, laying in bed unable to move, I will put on the Food House album and it will help me get going! I also like to do my morning work-outs to this album. A lyric that always stands out to me is "get your as* off Twitter cuz it gives you f*cking mental illness" because, same!
Favorite track: 8 now

3. My Agenda - Dorian Electra
Dorian is really on the rise and I'm so excited to see them grow! My Agenda is a wonderful body of work that takes you on a future pop journey through Dorian's world that we are all just living in and simply vibing. With production from Dylan Brady of 100 gecs, Count Baldor, Mood Killer, plus features from political activist Pussy Riot, meme icon Rebecca Black, and the legendary Village People, each tune packs an electronic punch to the face, or smash a glass to your head, as Dorian likes to do in a lot of their music videos. I also got to remix "Sorry Bro (I Love You) which is on my soundcloud!
Favorite track: Give Great Thanks

4. Glitch Gum (S/T) - Glitch Gum
An artist I discovered on Tiktok this year is Glitch Gum! I found him through an iguana alana video for his song with Cmten "Never Met!" and instantly became obsessed with his pitched up vocals and glitchy music production. When his self titled EP came out, I couldn't stop playing it on repeat while dancing in my bedroom. With relatable lyrics like "I'm a stinky lil dude, I don't even clean my room" in the song "Stinky", I knew instantly he is the future of pop music. I'm really grateful to have got to remix "Never Met!" in the summer, and he and I have a song together coming out in January 2021. Look out for Glitch Gum!
Favorite track: Glitch Biome

5. Rancho Catastrophe - Terror Jr
Terror Jr are incapable of putting a bad album out. This latest release from them came out later in the year, but it's been on rotation since! They continue to push musical boundaries with their witty lyrics paired with production that is comforting yet abrasive all at once. This album has up tempo dance tracks, crooning down-tempo sad girl booty shaking tunes, and beautiful ballads taking the listener on a musical journey of the ups and downs of staying in their fictional world of Rancho Catastrophe.
Favorite track: Flatline

BEST SHOW/VIRTUAL EVENT OF 2020:

Subculture Party! My best friends have been throwing virtual raves on zoom every Saturday night since the beginning of quarantine. I have discovered so many new artists from the zoom raves, made a lot of friends from all over the world, and it's all while being safe at home. They did real life parties before covid in Los Angeles and Orange County, but now they are taking the internet by storm and I am so happy to be a part of the world domination and rave family! I am a resident DJ/host and also help look for talented upcoming artists to be put on the show. It's a great way to make new friends and discover new music from the comfort of your home. You can find out how to join the next one by following them at @subcultureparty on instagram.

THICK

TOP 5 ALBUMS/EPS/DEMOS OF THE YEAR:

Nikki - I have been loving the Album Ultra Mono by Idles - everything in life right now feels lethargic and slow but that album really ignites the energy inside me. The drumming, guitar and lyrics - I just find myself feeling super motivated when I turn it on

Shari - I’ve been loving the new MGK/Travis Barker album! It’s really fun and nostalgic. Chromatica by Lady Gaga is a bop. For a dance/pop album all the lyrics have deep meaning. Women in Music Part 3 by Haim is such an incredible album!!

Kate - It's been a bit of a weird year for music discovery, since I usually go to a ton of live shows it's one of my main avenues of discovery. I've been making a lot of playlists to shuffle based on my ever-changing mood, but I'm in love with The Beths and their new album Jump Rope Gazers is amazing. Also loving Idles' Ultra Mono, they are everything I love about loud and aggressive punk music and always have such a positive message. I don't know if it technically qualifies, but Skegss' split single "Fantasising/Under The Thunder" was also a little spot of sunshine for me this year.

BEST SHOW/VIRTUAL EVENT OF 2020:

Nikki - Selfishly the best show of 2020 was the last show we played!! It was our album announcement show at Rough Trade in January and it was just perfect...filled with all our friends, family and all the best energy. I miss it!

Shari - We’re so lucky we got to play such a crazy fun show in January!! It’s humbling that we got to release an album and play at Rough Trade before the Covid hit the fan.

Kate - I'm really excited about a new series of videos that The Floodlight (a local independent venue) is doing -- we filmed an episode coming out December 21, but they've got so many good local artists on the show calendar and were such an amazing team to work with. All the proceeds are split between the venue and artists.

HOW CAN WE SUPPORT YOUR BAND?

Nikki - Keep blasting our music and sharing our tunes with the world!! Everything feels so stagnant right now and the fear of being left behind is something I am sure a lot of artists are experiencing. We are still here, creating and writing new music. When the world opens back up we just want to explode through the doors!

Shari - Keep listening to “5 Years Behind” on repeat until you hear secret messages

Kate - It's definitely helpful to keep streaming and supporting the album! We didn't really get a chance to share it with the world in a live setting, but you can listen at home and pretend we're playing for you on your couch! Follow us on social media (it feels so weird to say that) to say hi and keep an eye on everything we're working on :)

PROBLEM PATTERNS

TOP 5 ALBUMS/EPS/DEMOS OF THE YEAR:

Alanah:

1) Heart Shaped- Second Hand EP
Heart Shaped writes dreamy jangly guitar pop that is at once heartbreaking and uplifting, very reminiscent of Rose Melberg’s projects such as The Softies or Go Sailor. This is her first EP and every song is a delight. I can’t wait to see what she does next, and I’m so glad she’s Belfast based, so we may have the chance to see her live when we’re all safely able to do so.
2) NEKRA- Royal Distruptor EP
Straight up, no nonsense hardcore, featuring members of Efialitis, Frau and Child’s Pose. Their lyrics are confrontational and unapologetic, the music a fury of noise. Listening to this is like an adrenaline rush.
3) Dream Nails- Dream Nails LP
This album is such a labour of love. Each song delivers a powerful message, and they have crafted such a unique sound that ties it all together. Dream Nails are such an important band, and their songs are so incredibly relevant to the times right now. It will absolutely go down as one of the best debut albums of this era and genre.
4) The Crystal Furs- Beautiful and True
The Crystal Furs wear their hearts on their sleeves, pairing vulnerable honesty with incredibly sweet melodies. Unlike a lot of bands in their genre, their songs are not limited to the typical themes of crushes and unrequited love. While they still have their own brand of love songs, it’s not just romantic, but includes self love and friendship. They also highlight societal issues such as pink capitalism and gentrification. This album is indeed a very personal triumph for The Crystal Furs, but it will go on to soundtrack many more lives that come to hear these songs.
5) Special Interest- The Passion Of
Special Interest are arguably the most exciting punk band out right now. This is their second album and they just go from strength to strength with each song they’ve put out into the world. It’s at once a call back to great no wave acts of the ‘80s while still staring down the future. Dark synth lines pair perfectly with Alli Logout’s snarly vocals and powerful delivery. I have heard nothing but amazing things about their live performances and I really hope I have the opportunity to witness them in person one day.

Ciara:

Junk Drawer- Ready For the House
This Ship Argo- Kintsugi
Orville Peck- Showpony
The Garden- Kiss My Superbowl Ring
Remi Wolf- I’m Allergic To Dogs

Bev:

Hayley Williams- Petals For Armor
Junk Drawer- Ready For The House
New Pagans- Glacial Erratic
Joel Harkin- Never Happy
A Litany Of Failures Volume III

Beth:

Hayley Williams- Petals For Armor
Lady Gaga- Chromatica
Phoebe Bridgers- Punisher
Allie X- Cape God
Fiona Apple- Fetch the Bolt Cutters

BEST SHOW/VIRTUAL EVENT OF 2020:

Bethany: Sleater-Kinney in Dublin. Ciara threw a Problem Patterns shirt on stage, but it ended up hitting Corin Tucker mid-song. She picked it up afterwards, held it up to the crowd and said it was cute! We were all scundered but couldn’t stop laughing.

Ciara: The New Lesbian Songbook, a virtual show featuring covers of classic sapphic music.

Alanah: Spilt Milk Festival’s Anthology- A collection of performances from 13 acts. Junk Drawer made wonderful use of a green screen, Rising Damp took us all on a play through in a bizarre video game, and MHAOL’s visuals were a perfect pairing for their post punk noise- I especially loved their ode to a beloved deceased dog.

Bev: Junk Drawer’s set at Output Belfast 2020.

THE OSYX

By Erin

TOP 5 ALBUMS/EPS/DEMOS OF THE YEAR:

Quattracenta is local to our area and they released a gorgeous record this year, II. This is a dark, moody, and lush album. There are musical references to great 90’s music, but it’s entirely fresh with contrasting, almost delicate vocal melodies dancing in complex relationship with intricate and heavy guitar riffs.

War on Women, another fantastic local, released Wonderful Hell this year. We’ve been fans for a long time. It’s easy to get swept away in the sheer power of this band. Sometimes you just need to get straight to the point, funnel your rage, and shout along. This album delivers.

Waxahatchee – Saint Cloud There is something magical about hearing a musician grow and mature musically. This beautiful, reflective, and classic sounding album really tapped into something that was needed as we all hunkered down and revisited what’s really important this year.

Meet Me At the Altar – This band was an accidental find that subsequently burst onto the scene with a pink haired punk rock fury. They embody all of the fun, all of the tumultuous emotions of the very first time you find music that really gets you. The production and playing is incredibly tight, musical, and intense. They are also super fun to follow online. I would love to see our local bands Sheila and Pinkshift open for them someday.

Fiona Apple’s Fetch The Bolt Cutters was such a wild and unique release this year. It’s twists and turns, the masterful musicality behind what at times feels like obsessive stream of conscious chaos capture offer a pathway toward shedding the expected sounds and writing topics prescribed for womxn songwriters.

We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the potent single, “South Gotta Change” by Adia Victoria. This song was a call to action as well as a buoyant and forward looking anthem right when we needed it.

BEST SHOW/VIRTUAL EVENT OF 2020:

Live From Comet Ping Pong back in May was really cool. It featured a great lineup of local to DC bands like Teen Mortgage, Den-Mate, and Lotion Princess. It was streamed on IG and really captured some joy during a tough time for sure.

MOBINA GALORE

By Jenna, singer/guitarist

TOP 5 ALBUMS/EPS/DEMOS OF THE YEAR:

Laura Jane Grace - Stay Alive
The Chicks - Gashlighter
Taylor Swift - Folklore
The Lawrence Arms - Skeleton Coast
Courtney Marie Andrews - Old Flowers

I didn’t spend a lot of time seeking out new music this year, it mostly fell into my lap with the exception of some albums I was highly anticipating. A lot of my favourites aren’t punk related but I would consider some of these artists to be punk as fuck in their own way.

BEST SHOW/VIRTUAL EVENT OF 2020:

We’ve watched so many virtual shows this year going back to April I’m sure I forget most of them haha, but I honestly might say some of my faves were early on via Facebook Live and Instagram when they sounded bad and didn’t necessarily look good either but us and the world were so desperate for live music it brought a crazy amount of fun and life into our isolated lives. Booze Cruise (Hamburg & Bristol) did a bunch of weekend long “festivals” that were booze filled and fun. In terms of the high quality streams we have access to now; Brandi Carlile performed By the Way, I Forgive You really soon after we moved into our new house so that’s a stand out. I’m currently watching the Bad Religion Decades one which is amazing and includes interviews as well so you get a little more than just the live show.

HOW CAN WE SUPPORT YOUR BAND?

The easiest way to support our band is to buy our merch! We have been getting new merch made throughout the year and I actually quite enjoy packing and shipping it out. You can find us on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Spotify, whatever … search our name and we’re the only thing that pops up :)

DIRTY JUNK

By Renn Fontana (she/her)

TOP 5 ALBUMS/EPS/DEMOS OF THE YEAR:

GUMMING - OVERRIPE
I've been following this band for about 2 years now after stumbling across a short video of them on instagram. This summer I planned on attempting to book a show with them for a tour through the southeast I had literally been begging my drummer to go on just so we could pass through Richmond, VA to play with this band. Guess I'll never know if they'd have said yes or not.
https://gumming.bandcamp.com/album/overripe

Moodie Black - F U Z Z
This record came out at the worst possible time but it really got me through some heavy feels brought on by the pandemic and the Minneapolis Uprising after the murder of George Floyd. K-Death constantly amazes me with her drive and dedication to her craft. Her beats, vocals and general artistry are like nothing I've ever heard before and I can't wait to see what she does next.
https://moodieblackdeath.bandcamp.com/album/f-u-z-z

LINGUA IGNOTA - THE CALIGULA DEMOS
This year I really got into Lingua Ignota. I don't totally know why because generally this really isn't my kind of thing but it's good driving and thinking music and great for hiking through the woods alone while taking artistic photos of nature that no one will ever see.
https://linguaignota.bandcamp.com/album/the-caligula-demos

EVV - Dead to Me
I love so much about EVV's music. She has such a strong voice both in her songwriting and her work in the community. I hadn't gotten the opportunity to see her live and was really looking forward to seeing and hearing more from her. Guess I'll have to wait but in the meantime, I'm still enjoying the singles she's put out.
https://evvmusic.bandcamp.com/track/dead-to-me

Dana Sterling - Departure
This band barely completed tracking instruments before the lock downs hit and vocals were recorded in an isolated set up that had us fearing for our lives. Not long after, we would be protesting the Minneapolis Police Department's extreme police brutality in our city together as a band. I joined this project as a vocalist alongside one of my closest friends, Natalie Grace, after the band had already written most of the music. Playing a show together seems like a faraway dream.
https://danasterling.bandcamp.com

BEST SHOW/VIRTUAL EVENT OF 2020:

I wasn't able to go to many shows or virtual music events in 2020. I spent most of the year between January - July in grad school completing my MSW and participating in mutual aid and a variety of occupations and demonstrations during the Minneapolis Uprising. Between August - December I made a move back home to Chicago due to COVID and have been focused on establishing myself here and engaging in the communities I now live and work in. Music has quite honestly taken a backseat but I love DIY and everything it stands for, especially the ways it has helped me connect with others in my own backyard and all over the country. In 2021 I'm hoping to come back to it and everything I love about DIY including enjoying the music my friends, and so many artists I have yet to discover, are creating and displaying via virtual events and, hopefully one day, live shows.

HOW CAN WE SUPPORT YOUR BAND?

By prioritizing the voices of historically exploited and oppressed groups and denouncing systems that perpetuate white supremacy. Our music is a direct response to the anger we have towards things like the non-profit and prison industrial complexes, capitalism, colonialism and so much more. If you want, you can find our social media or the Don't Panic Records bandcamp accounts pretty easily. While we absolutely love everyone who supports us that way, we have a super special place in our hearts for the people who are inspired by our music to go out into their communities and take action to create real, lasting change. Find a coalition, mutual aid group or community resource that speaks to you to volunteer with, or hell, even just making an effort to get to know your neighbors and build bonds with people who are different from you is an excellent step towards community engagement and equity. If you need any help getting involved with your community, email us at dirty.junkband@gmail.com or message us wherever you see us and I would love to help you figure it out. Seriously.

HOW CAN WE SUPPORT YOUR BAND?

But we would still love it if you gave the album a listen. You can hear it and buy it at http://lavenderwitch.bandcamp.com or order it directly from us by emailing at lavenderwitchband@gmail.com. The CD includes a zine too! Post-covid, we’d love to get invited to play a lot of shows again. We also enjoy being interviewed for zines, radioshows or podcasts and having our music included in soundtracks and playlists. :-)

THE DEAD END KIDS

By Charlie

TOP 5 ALBUMS/EPS/DEMOS OF THE YEAR:

1. MIDNIGHT – Rebirth by Blasphemy
Sounds just as evil as the title implies. The masked trio delivers a fast-paced punk hybrid of black
and thrash metal that repeatedly shows melodic vocals aren’t necessary to write catchy songs.
Midnight also happened to be my last concert of 2019 supporting their musical archetype Venom
in Leipzig.

2. CODE ORANGE – Underneath
Code Orange have always been a versatile act in modern metallic hardcore since they create their
style by constantly experimenting with various genres. This time, “Underneath” incorporates even
more electronic and industrial sounds with crushing breakdowns and calm moments, perfectly
captured in songs like “Swallowing the rabbit whole”. As if that weren’t enough, Code Orange
additionally released an acoustic EP, channelling strong 90s grunge vibes. Unsurprisingly, they
covered Alice in Chains’ “Down in a Hole” in the spirit of the old ‘MTV Unplugged’ concerts.

3. MANTAR – Grungetown Hooligans II
Even the two-headed Sludge/Punk/Doom-outfit “Mantar” embraced their love for 90s music by
releasing an entire cover album. Therefore, Hanno and Erinç picked their favourite grunge and
noise-rock songs from their youth. In contrast to other recordings, Hanno sports quite a different
vocal style while maintaining their signature sound wall. As the title indicates, these two jokesters
do not take themselves too seriously and leave us waiting for “Grungetown Hooligans I”.

4. CARCASS – Despicable
It’s been seven years since the masters of extreme metal released their last album “Surgical Steel”.
Due to COVID-19, the band’s recent full-length album had to be postponed to 2021. At this point
in their career, the release compels the entire musical repertoire that Carcass stands for.
Although “Despicable” consists only of songs that didn’t make it on the album, it even more raises
high expectations about the upcoming release.

5. PUSCIFER – Existential Reckoning
As a long-time fan of Maynard James Keenan ́s diverse musical projects, I consider Puscifer to be
one of his more unpredictable acts. On their new release, their musical style further evolved into
a synth-driven electronic arrangement. Featuring their signature programmed drumbeats and
on-point vocal-harmonies, Puscifer pursue to uncover the truth about alien life.
Unfortunately, I didn ́t listen to the whole album as much as I would have liked, but the song
“Apocalyptical” is a spot-on description of this year ́s spirit.

BEST SHOW/VIRTUAL EVENT OF 2020:

My last concert of 2020 took place in a shabby but intimate rehearsal room somewhere in the
industrial area of Dresden and was organised by the bands. The evening offered a mixture of
doom, punk and grind as its best. Could have been worse.

HOW CAN WE SUPPORT YOUR BAND?

As always, buy merch and attend our gigs whenever that is possible again.

- The Spits "VI", because of course.

(Anaïs, Frankie, MG)

BEST SHOW/VIRTUAL EVENT OF 2020:

If you mean that we've played, in the B.C. (Before COVID): we played a really fun show at Trans Pecos at the end of February with Jelly Kelly, Johnny Dynamite, and V0id Boys. Looking back, I think we were all blissfully unaware of what was to come and excited for the spring. I think that was the last time we had a mosh pit!
In COVID times, we were lucky enough in October to play a socially distanced outdoor show at a community farm in Brooklyn. It was really wonderful to have the sounds of live music filling the blocks surrounding, and gave us hope for the future beyond the pandemic someday.

We'd also like to shout out to Our Wicked Lady for the most innovative livestream show format - bands play through the venue soundsystem downstairs, and their sets are filmed and stream live online as well as upstairs for a seated audience in the outdoor rooftop bar. We played one for our 7" release, and we've attended several friends', and the energy is so present in the audience, despite being separated from the band. (People even stomp between songs instead of clap, so the band can hear them from downstairs️). OWL is a pillar of support for the local music scene at a time when we all direly need that.

James Joyce does post-punk.

Torres - Silver Tongue
Futuristic octave fuzz lesbian country.

Fiona Apple - Fetch The Bolt Cutters
The return of the resident sad bitch.

KATE (vocals/guitar)

Mrs Piss - Self-surgery
I'm a huge Chelsea Wolfe fan and everything she touches, whether it veers from gothic folk to industrial and alt-rock is magic. This album by Chelsea Wolfe and Jess Gowrie was the cathartic album I needed for 2020! Heavy alt-rock, grunge and metal sounds from two powerful musicians.

Fontaines DC - A Hero's Death
One of my favourite bands of recent times.
(Also, CC what Maxine said...)

Emma Ruth Rundle & Thou - May Our Chambers Be Full
I got into Emma Ruth Rundle through her previous band Marriages and most recent solo album On Dark Horses. I love her pairing of delicacy with dark and sparse sounds that are quite American gothic/folk. This album from ERR and Thou veers into goth/sludge metal. It's an intense and enthralling listen.

Protomatryr - Ultimate Success Today
Spindly, twisted and droning album from Detroit post-punks. Thought-provoking musings on themes on capitalism, the trappings of modern work and society and authoritarianism.

Nadine Shah - Kitchen Sink
Avant-garde pop sounds. The song Trad had me from the opening lyrics "Shave my legs, Freeze my eggs, Will you want me when I am old."

BEST SHOW/VIRTUAL EVENT OF 2020:

Maxine: Jarvis Cocker live at the Barbican Centre tribute to Michael Clark

Kate: Admittedly, I didn't properly watch any live streams (I know, I know...). I enjoyed Anna Calvi's impromptu riffs and Nick Cave covers from her bed.

CHOKED UP

By Cristy Road Carrera

TOP 5 ALBUMS/EPS/DEMOS OF THE YEAR:

So many amazing bands released great music this year, but since Choked Up are currently spread out across America, I decided to just list my top 5 that gave me life:

Green Day- Father of All Motherfuckers - thank good green day can sound like prince, while continuing to write my favorite songs- now that im a grownup bisexual. meat and potato green day fans can worship kerplunk all they fucking want.... Listening to graffitia, sugar youth, meet me on the roof, and father of all... on the same album makes me feel so full and proud.

Rebelmatic- Ghost in the Shadows - sub-punk labels are so god damn dead. Rebelmatic transcend through all the pre-Y2K melodic punk and hardcore I grew up with, creating the perfectly aggresive melodic punk rock album to fuck shit up before breakfast. Their songs are sick as all hell and their personal narrative on being Black in Amerikkka is a necessary story to listen to.

Profetas -Afrodisiacos - This All day all night mood is where I have gone when I need a break from rock music which is pretty regularly. My heart belongs to punk until some calming reflective beat full of ancestral rhythms and instruments take me back to my brain before it had found a home in punk (Im first generation Cuban). I needed to discover this this year. Profetas mix of afrobreat + dancehall includes rallying lyrical cries to the the queer community.

Laura Jane Grace - Stay Alive - ok, so when anything reminds me of against me’s sabot ep + crime as forgiven by, i cant connect because nothing can replace the solace and life i got from those records during one of the most polarizing and transformative times in my life (2002). So when I started listening to this I totally started crying-- but its ok because its more of Laura Jane’s songs and that familiarity not only helps me connect to my past and music I love; but also-- its a fucking sick record.

The Network - Trans Am - Okay, so apparently this isnt Green Day, which is fine because I should discover new bands anyway. Ive played this almost every night with the "party" setting on my LED Magic bulb since it was released a month ago.

BEST SHOW/VIRTUAL EVENT OF 2020:

Black Punk Virtual World Tour was so amazing and packed with so many BIPOC Artists from all over the world-- it went on for over amonth! And honestly, Pouzza Virtual Fest was the first show I did -- bands were watching eachothers sets and commenting and it almost felt like real life. The pandemic had just started.

Interview w/ Jennifer "JJ" Leigh ( THE DEVOTCHKAS)

In 1996, three girls from New-York got together to form The Devotchkas . A band that would go on to become one of the most talked about all-girl oï punk of the scene at the time. A time that was long before smartphones and social media, when bands only had web pages on Geocities and Angelfire, which is where we first heard about them. Because in 2001, after Jennifer Leigh, (better known has JJ ) took vocal duties, the band released an iconic album, that was not only our introduction to them, but to how much ass a women can kick when they play badass music. The next year they went on hiatus, and we never heard about them. The whole industry evolved, but for us they remained legendary in their own way.  Fast foward 20 years later, the same line-up that released that iconic album, decided it was time to get back in action. This weekend, the gang is set to play at the C.Y. Fest in Los Angeles, not once, but twice, and even though we can't attend, we couldn't be more exited at the i...

Alright so here's our final list for 2022. We've discovered so many amazing bands this year but what we enjoy the most is seeing bands that are still active, recording and putting new noise out. So here are 90 songs that came across our radar this year. Featuring some of the most badass women, queers and non-binary people, of course ;) Oh and for those of you who don't have the time to browse through all these links, here is what you were waiting for...our epic 2022 playlist, featuring all our best albums, EPs and singles of the year. Clocking at around 11 hours and presenting 203 bands, we think you'll def find something you like in there. Enjoy! THE playlis...

THE PHOTO PASS with MIHAELA PETRESCU

When did you first pick up a camera and what motivated you to start photography? I picked up a camera at around 4 years old. My mom did some photography when i was young, so I grew up with a camera in my hands. Did you study or are you self taught? I studied in cinema/video/communications at Dawson College, then I went to Concordia University in the same field. I never actually studied photography but I had a lot of photo classes. Do you remember the first show you ever shot and how it went? My uncle played in bands since I was really young. The first show I shot was my uncle's first show with his new band. I was around 13 years old. The stress was real! I think I had one of those point and shoot cameras. I also remember my first show for a media; it was Septicflesh at Café Campus. How did you know you wanted to do concert photography and what do you love the most about it? The first concert I ever saw was of Cher . I was maybe 8 or 9 years old and I vividly remember watching the ...
