Witches of the Week #1: Jigsaw Youth

Hello!

My name is Nastacha Beck! I play guitar for Jigsaw Youth. Thank you so much for reaching out to us! We seriously appreciate it.

1- Where is the band from and what's the best thing to do there?

We are from Staten Island, New York! I think the best thing to do here is to go to local punk shows in my opinion. We're always down for live music whether its at a dive bar or a house party.

2- What does your name stand for and what was the runner up?

Jigsaw Youth is the name of a song by the punk band Bikini Kill. When Maria and I were growing up the lyrics had always resonated with us and the song became like an anthem for us in high school. Kathleen Hanna (the lead singer) is singing about how she doesn't care about society's preconceived ideas of how a woman should be and how a woman should act. She is in control of her own life, her own choices, and she's is proud of it on top of encouraging sisterhood and standing up for her rights. She doesn't seek validation from anyone but finds it within herself instead and we felt that that attitude was admirable. We looked at Bikini Kill like they were older sisters or even mothers to us. When we met Kathleen at a show and told her we were in a band named after her song she jumped up and down with a giant smile on her face, embraced us, and told us to take over New York. She shouted us out on stage at The Julie Ruin show that night too and we will never forget that.

The runner up name I think was Rideaux Rouges I believe but I wasn't vibing with it. We had another one that I can't seem to remember. Something about drilling a hole in someones skull.. something crazy haha. We had a couple of ideas in mind but once Maira said Jigsaw Youth I said SAY NO MORE CAUSE WE ARE JIGSAW YOUTH NOW!!

3- Describe your sound using a movie title.

Oooo I'm gonna go with "The Crow."

4- Describe each band member using a meal.

Alex (Drums) - Chicken fingers and French fries PLAIN
Maria (Vocals/Bass) - Fries, oreos, and a milkshake
Nastacha (Guitar) - My Dad's spaghetti with meat sauce.. and throw some ricotta on that too

5- Name 3 bands who would headline your dream fest?

The Distillers, Smashing Pumpkins, and Deftones.

6- For or not being described as "female fronted"?

I'm indifferent to it. We are female fronted so I don't mind that label but music is music. You don't necessarily need a gender role attached to it BUT, if it happens to inspire other people to start a band with the idea that even if the odds are against you you can still succeed then hell yeah I'm down. We are proud to be women in music. Women in rock essentially. I think its safe to say that this genre in general is mostly male dominated so it is nice to stand out in that sense but at the end of the day the music speaks for itself.

7- Are you signed on a label and why?

We are not signed to a label. Why? You tell me. Lol

8- What's the most punk thing you've seen on tour/in a show?

One time we were playing this complete hole in the wall venue/apartment. We've played there a few times and every single time it was completely crazy and rowdy. It was so much fun I honestly can't even express how insane it was haha. I just remember playing our set and it was so hot and sweaty. Everyone was moshing and screaming in this small space. People were literally piled on top of each other and some had to watch from the hallway or outside because it was just too crowded to get in. So mid-set this one girl just fell while moshing and completely CRACKED HER TEETH on the floor. She literally got up.. and continued to mosh like nothing happened. This girl did not even care she just bashed her face on the floor. It was so brutal to watch but she was such a badass about it that I was even in shock while playing. I felt so bad but she strut across the room the entire set. She was just ready to rock.

9- Best quarantine activies?

Practice your craft! Whatever it is! Whether its art, music, writing, etc, take advantage of this time to grind and get better. Once quarantine is over show your projects and network!

Interview w/ Jennifer "JJ" Leigh ( THE DEVOTCHKAS)

In 1996, three girls from New-York got together to form The Devotchkas . A band that would go on to become one of the most talked about all-girl oï punk of the scene at the time. A time that was long before smartphones and social media, when bands only had web pages on Geocities and Angelfire, which is where we first heard about them. Because in 2001, after Jennifer Leigh, (better known has JJ ) took vocal duties, the band released an iconic album, that was not only our introduction to them, but to how much ass a women can kick when they play badass music. The next year they went on hiatus, and we never heard about them. The whole industry evolved, but for us they remained legendary in their own way.  Fast foward 20 years later, the same line-up that released that iconic album, decided it was time to get back in action. This weekend, the gang is set to play at the C.Y. Fest in Los Angeles, not once, but twice, and even though we can't attend, we couldn't be more exited at the i

THE PHOTO PASS with MIHAELA PETRESCU

When did you first pick up a camera and what motivated you to start photography? I picked up a camera at around 4 years old. My mom did some photography when i was young, so I grew up with a camera in my hands. Did you study or are you self taught? I studied in cinema/video/communications at Dawson College, then I went to Concordia University in the same field. I never actually studied photography but I had a lot of photo classes. Do you remember the first show you ever shot and how it went? My uncle played in bands since I was really young. The first show I shot was my uncle's first show with his new band. I was around 13 years old. The stress was real! I think I had one of those point and shoot cameras. I also remember my first show for a media; it was Septicflesh at Café Campus. How did you know you wanted to do concert photography and what do you love the most about it? The first concert I ever saw was of Cher . I was maybe 8 or 9 years old and I vividly remember watching the

THE 90 BEST SINGLES OF 2022

Alright so here's our final list for 2022. We've discovered so many amazing bands this year but what we enjoy the most is seeing bands that are still active, recording and putting new noise out. A lot of them are releasing singles now, which has become almost a standard considering what the industry has become. It's an awesome way to get your name out there fast, so don't wait to record a full album or even EP. We wanna hear you, so just go ahead and record a song! We'll definitely look for it. So here are 90 songs that came across our radar this year. Featuring some of the most badass women, queers and non-binary people, of course ;) Oh and for those of you who don't have the time to browse through all these links, here is what you were waiting for...our epic 2022 playlist, featuring all our best albums, EPs and singles of the year.
