Witches of the Week #2: Sharp Violet

1- Where is the band from and what's the best thing to do there?

We're from Long Island, New York. Some of the best things to do here are go to the beach, New York City and seeing live music!

2- What does your name stand for and what was the runner up?

Sharp Violet- was taken from Violet Sharp, the nanny for Charles Lindbergh's family.  She was a suspect in the Lindbergh Baby Kidnapping scandal. Our name is Sharp Violet not Violet Sharp we won't steal your baby but we will steal your heart.
The original name that we had for the first month or so of being a band was actually Brazen Broads. We're glad we changed it!

3- Describe your sound using a movie title.

Wonder Woman

4- Describe each band member using a meal.

Liz- Pistachio Ice Cream: rare and hard to find but when you do you're glad you did
Alli- Grilled Cheese: tough on the outside, soft and gooey on the inside with a cheesy sense of humor.
Marie- Baked Alaska: because someone has to be unnecessarily extra.
Jess- Cheesecake: enough said
Jasmine- Paula Deen Special 10 Butter Sticks Poundcake: because she is heart stopper

5- Name 3 bands who would headline your dream fest?

The Distillers, No Doubt, Green Day

6- For or not being described as "female fronted"?

Normally,  gender shouldn't matter but it's still so rare to see females in / fronting bands. Describing bands as female fronted helps distinguish the band and could lead to a more diverse music scene. We don't mind being described as female fronted/ all girl band.

7- Are you signed on a label and why?

We are 100% DIY! We write and record all of our music in Liz's basement, we have our own studio there. Alli designs our album cover art and Jasmine designs our merch. If a label wanted to sign us, we're definitely interested but for now it's fun doing everything on our own. We created our own "label" called Under The L, after the town we're from Lindenhurst.

8- What's the most punk thing you've seen on tour/in a show?

We played a backyard show called “Transcentennal Piszazz Partay”, it was spectacular disaster! One of the bands we played with brought different props for their performance. The singer proceeded to urinate in a random sink in front of everyone and then smashed it with a hammer. Luckily, none of us got hit with shrapnel piss sink. As if that wasn’t enough for one show, the cops came and broke up the show during the second song of our set. The cops threatened to take our instruments if we continued playing, it was very fitting that the song we were playing (Boys and Candy) features the lyrics “You’ll never take me alive”. Definitely, the strangest and funniest show we ever played.

Second Choice-One time we played a show and some garbage human yelled "show us your tits" during our set. After the show, Jasmine hunted down the guy and confronted him asking if he would like someone saying that to his Mom.

9- Best quarantine activities?

Listening to music, learning an instrument, reading, playing games, cooking and watching movies. We just played virtual Cards Against Humanity with our friends for Liz's Birthday and highly recommend anyone getting a group of friends or if you're daring enough your family to play.

10- What's the best way to support your band?

Listen to our music on Spotify or Bandcamp and follow us on Facebook/ Instagram!

Interview w/ Jennifer "JJ" Leigh ( THE DEVOTCHKAS)

In 1996, three girls from New-York got together to form The Devotchkas . A band that would go on to become one of the most talked about all-girl oï punk of the scene at the time. A time that was long before smartphones and social media, when bands only had web pages on Geocities and Angelfire, which is where we first heard about them. Because in 2001, after Jennifer Leigh, (better known has JJ ) took vocal duties, the band released an iconic album, that was not only our introduction to them, but to how much ass a women can kick when they play badass music. The next year they went on hiatus, and we never heard about them. The whole industry evolved, but for us they remained legendary in their own way.  Fast foward 20 years later, the same line-up that released that iconic album, decided it was time to get back in action. This weekend, the gang is set to play at the C.Y. Fest in Los Angeles, not once, but twice, and even though we can't attend, we couldn't be more exited at the i...
