Witches of the Week #15: Smalltown Tigers

1- Where is the band from and what's the best thing to do there?

We’re from Rimini. The best thing to do out here is going to the beach.

2- What does your name stand for and what was the runner up?

The early runner-up was Broken Heels, but then a friend came up with Smalltown Tigers, for no particular reasons. We liked it and we thought that the name reflected who we are and where we come from. We come from a small town in the north east of Italy, Rimini, so.. You may think, why Tigers? Well, the tiger is a feline and we feel a bit like that. Of course, we could have chosen cats as well, but Smalltown Cats sounded weird for a non-rockabilly band.

3- Describe your sound using a movie title.

Edward Scissorhands

4- Describe each band member using a meal

Deb : pizza

Monty : crispy French fries

Castlel : low Carbo meal

5- Name 3 bands who would headline your dream fest?

RAMONES, The Who and Iggy Pop

6- For or not being described as "female fronted"?

We are a power female trio, not only a female trio. Although the only thing that counts in rock’n’roll it’s if you’re good or bad, not the gender.

7- Are you signed on a label and why?

Yes we signed with Area Pirata, a cool Tuscan independent label. Why? Why not! :D Joking aside, they wanted us so bad from the start, and our promoter told us they’re one of the best labels out here. We’ve been really happy to join their roster.

8- What's the most punk thing you've seen on tour/in a show?

You mean something that could be mentioned without going to jail or being sued by someone? :D  Well I remember the first time I went to a punk rock gig and somebody cut the electricity in the room and the band that kept on playing while the crowd kept on pogoing to the drum sound only. It has been a blast. Other things, well it’s better not to mention them on paper. You never know. :D

9- The best album of all time and why?

The Ramones, ‘It’s Alive’. For us, it’s been love at first listen, it is an album that releases energy. Maybe it's the real reason why we play. The first time we listened to it we thought: OK, that’s what we want to do. Get on stage and play fast, even if at the time we didn't even know how to play any instrument. A few months later, we had already defined who would play what and started rehearsing.

10- What's the best way to support your band?

Buy our album at https://areapiratarec.bandcamp.com/album/five-things ,follow us on social media and come at our gigs. I assure you we’ll have fun!

Interview w/ Jennifer "JJ" Leigh ( THE DEVOTCHKAS)

In 1996, three girls from New-York got together to form The Devotchkas . A band that would go on to become one of the most talked about all-girl oï punk of the scene at the time. A time that was long before smartphones and social media, when bands only had web pages on Geocities and Angelfire, which is where we first heard about them. Because in 2001, after Jennifer Leigh, (better known has JJ ) took vocal duties, the band released an iconic album, that was not only our introduction to them, but to how much ass a women can kick when they play badass music. The next year they went on hiatus, and we never heard about them. The whole industry evolved, but for us they remained legendary in their own way.  Fast foward 20 years later, the same line-up that released that iconic album, decided it was time to get back in action. This weekend, the gang is set to play at the C.Y. Fest in Los Angeles, not once, but twice, and even though we can't attend, we couldn't be more exited at the i...
