Witches of the Week #13: The Dead End Kids

1-Where is the band from and what's the best thing to do there?

We´re spread across Dresden and Leipzig, which are two of the largest cities in Saxony, Germany. From a cultural perspective, both have historical city centers, many parks and lakes as well. Leipzig Connewitz and Dresden-Neustadt would be our favourite districts where most of our local clubs and concert venues are. And obviously, like anywhere else in Germany, we’ve got several breweries and lots of different beers to enjoy. Cheers!

2-What does your name stand for and what was the runner up?

It might sound like a lot of street cred, but kidding aside: We do not take ourselves too seriously. Actually, there is one famous band with the same name, which already led to funny incidents in our comment section.

3-Describe your sound using a movie title.

Maybe “Catch me if you can”. On the one hand, the title could be a description for our upbeat tempo, on the other hand the story itself fits very well. The movie is about Frank Abagnale, who is a real-life imposter able to slip many different identities. He was so convincing that no one noticed it until he was finally arrested. Maybe this could be kind of a description for our various musically influences, but I´m not entirely sure about that.

4-Describe each band member using a meal.

That’s a tough one …

Charlie (guitar) would be a cheese fondue, because who doesn´t like some cheesy melodies, right? For Aaron, our bassist and only straight vegan member, the choice is perfectly easy: a bass-ic vegan burger! Caro, our vocalist, could be a piece of licorice, both saline and sweet, because she is a very polarizing person. As our ultimate rhythmic foundation, Fatima would be a punchy chili con carne.

5-Name 3 bands who would headline your dream fest?

A fest with The Baboon Show, The Hellacopters, The Dead Kennedys and The Distillers would be so awesome! Well that's a lot of “The”.

6-For or not being described as "female fronted"?

Our band was temporarily described as such because it's technically true. In the meantime, we got rid of the term though we support any bands that are labelled “female fronted”. However, we are four equal persons who don´t want to get any “wrong” advantages and we’re against gender stereotypes.

7-Are you signed on a label and why?

Yes, we are recently signed to RilRec Records. They supported our latest vinyl production and distribution. Besides, our dear friends Matze from Tape Or Die and especially Herz from FucktheMainstreamRecords are responsible for all our tape releases. And they did a lot more for the band, too.

8-What's the most punk thing you've seen on tour/in a show?

Alcoholic drinks at a concert with alcohol prohibition in the backstage area.

9-Best lockdown activities?

Collecting toilet paper and canned food is unfortunately not that interesting, so we used the newly won time to promote our current album “Kommando Glitzer”, designed some merch, and enjoyed listening to our first vinyl finally. But don’t worry, rehearsing fell short as always…

10-What's the best way to support your band?

As easy as it may sound, come to our concerts and buy some merch if you like our music.

Interview w/ Jennifer "JJ" Leigh ( THE DEVOTCHKAS)

In 1996, three girls from New-York got together to form The Devotchkas . A band that would go on to become one of the most talked about all-girl oï punk of the scene at the time. A time that was long before smartphones and social media, when bands only had web pages on Geocities and Angelfire, which is where we first heard about them. Because in 2001, after Jennifer Leigh, (better known has JJ ) took vocal duties, the band released an iconic album, that was not only our introduction to them, but to how much ass a women can kick when they play badass music. The next year they went on hiatus, and we never heard about them. The whole industry evolved, but for us they remained legendary in their own way.  Fast foward 20 years later, the same line-up that released that iconic album, decided it was time to get back in action. This weekend, the gang is set to play at the C.Y. Fest in Los Angeles, not once, but twice, and even though we can't attend, we couldn't be more exited at the i...

THE PHOTO PASS with MIHAELA PETRESCU

When did you first pick up a camera and what motivated you to start photography? I picked up a camera at around 4 years old. My mom did some photography when i was young, so I grew up with a camera in my hands. Did you study or are you self taught? I studied in cinema/video/communications at Dawson College, then I went to Concordia University in the same field. I never actually studied photography but I had a lot of photo classes. Do you remember the first show you ever shot and how it went? My uncle played in bands since I was really young. The first show I shot was my uncle's first show with his new band. I was around 13 years old. The stress was real! I think I had one of those point and shoot cameras. I also remember my first show for a media; it was Septicflesh at Café Campus. How did you know you wanted to do concert photography and what do you love the most about it? The first concert I ever saw was of Cher . I was maybe 8 or 9 years old and I vividly remember watching the ...
