Les Insoumises

So here it is, our best albums of 2020. Of course there could be much more. We could also have seperated it into albums, EPs, demos and even singles. But we've got something else prepared for you, that will cover much more ground than this. For now, these are the releases that made a big impression on us this year. Some because of their words, some because of their riffs, some because of both, some because they are just fun to blast out loud, and some simply because it's amazing that they even have seen the light of day.  The bottom line is, there was so many great releases by band fronted or composed of women, non-binary, queers and bipoc artists this year, that it's important to keep supporting any one of these, in any way you can. No need to say that with shows still on hold everywhere, spending 5$ on an EP, means a lot to any of these bands. We can all make a difference and what better way to do it than by bringing back marginalized artists to the front of the punk/rock...

1- Where is the band from and what's the best thing to do there? We’re from Los Angeles and the best thing you can do here is literally anything you want to do! Being outside, walking around or biking or hiking and enjoying the consistently beautiful weather.  2- What does your name stand for and what was the runner up? Il y a même pas 2 ans, ont découvrait le groupe Hipshot , grâce à la sorti de son premier EP éponyme, et de son premier single/vidéoclip, pour la pièce " Straight Into ". Originaire de la ville de Québec, le quatuor a rapidement attiré notre attention, non seulement parce que les 4 chansons de l'opus étaient savoureuses à souhait (du caramel grunge c'est délicieux!), mais surtout à cause de la voix unique de sa chanteuse, Marie Desbiens . Son timbre, rauque et grave, est livré avec un aplomb incisif, qui nous rappel immédiatement les années 90's, où les groupes riot grrrl faisaient le pont entre le punk et le grunge. Un an plus tard, le groupe était de retour en studio, et c'est tout récemment qu'il a sorti le premier single de ce nouveau matériel, et on adore l'évolution que Hipshot a entreprit. 1- Where is the band from and what's the best thing to do there? We’re from Rimini. The best thing to do out here is going to the beach. 2- What does your name stand for and what was the runner up? The early runner-up was Broken Heels, but then a friend came up with Smalltown Tigers, for no particular reasons. We liked it and we thought that the name reflected who we are and where we come from. We come from a small town in the north east of Italy, Rimini, so.. You may think, why Tigers? Well, the tiger is a feline and we feel a bit like that. Of course, we could have chosen cats as well, but Smalltown Cats sounded weird for a non-rockabilly band. 3- Describe your sound using a movie title. 1- D'où vient le groupe et qu'est-ce qu'il y a de bon à faire là-bas? Le groupe vient de Lyon et ses alentours. C’est une ville riche en spécialités culinaires comme, par exemple, la cervelle des canuts, le saucisson brioché, les quenelles, les bugnes, la praline… En somme, beaucoup, BEAUCOUP, de bouffe ! Mais on ne fait pas que manger, il y a également de nombreuses activités socioculturelles, de très beaux monuments (théâtre antique de Fourvière, traboules)… Et plein de concerts, pleins de bars, de bars à concerts… Bref, on ne s’ennuie jamais ! 2- Que signifie votre nom de groupe et quel était le deuxième choix? Le nom vient évidemment de la chanson de ce cher Jimi Hendrix… Le CD tournait en boucle dans la voiture de Gabi quand elle a eu l’idée de monter un groupe de rock… et puis pour la petite histoire, c’est grâce à ce nom qu’elle a « chopé » Lucianne à la fin d’un concert : « Hey, ça te dirait d’être la guitariste d’un groupe qui s’appellerait The Foxy Ladies ? ». 1-Where is the band from and what's the best thing to do there? We´re spread across Dresden and Leipzig, which are two of the largest cities in Saxony, Germany. From a cultural perspective, both have historical city centers, many parks and lakes as well. Leipzig Connewitz and Dresden-Neustadt would be our favourite districts where most of our local clubs and concert venues are. It's a feminist take and tribute to the well known English punk-rock band.
