WITCHES OF THE WEEK #19: VAGINA WITCHCRAFT

1- Where is the band from and what's the best thing to do there?

Vagina Witchcraft is from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The best thing to do here would have been going to local shows, but that hasn't been an option because of the pandemic :( So instead I really just listen to my record collection at home which is constantly growing these days! :)

2- What does your band name stand for and what was the runner up?

The band name Vagina Witchcraft stands for power, and just owning who you are outright with no shame. Vagina as a word is often associated with weakness or being timid or scared and we aim to change that. One of the runner ups for band name was Aminatu, named after Queen Aminatu, a powerful 16th century African warrior queen.

3- Describe your sound using a movie title.

X-Men ?

4- What song would describe each member of the band?

Kayla - Oppressor - Jesus Piece
"I refuse to bite my tongue, the revolution has begun, I refuse to die next. Lift your boot from my fucking neck."
Dylan - Ergophobia - Psychedelic Porn Crumpets
"Fuck this, I quit!"
Seppel - Eyes Like The Sky - King Gizzard & The LIzard Wizard
"The bad, white men call him the devil. The Yavapai call him 'Eyes Like the Sky'"
Julien - Accidents - Alexisonfire
"Do they even cure you? Or is it just to humour us before we die?"

5- Name 3 bands who would headline your dream fest?

Dream festival headliners... Missy Elliott, Every Time I Die...and Bon Iver

6- Your opinion on being described as "female fronted"?

I think its bullshit when the band is described as female fronted! Mainly because I AM NOT A FEMALE, I am non-binary. GENDER IS NOT A GENRE.

7- Are you signed on a label and why?

No we are not signed on a label. We have discussed pursuing it, especially when we were planning our tour in spring of 2020. Once that all got cancelled, we turned our focus solely on creating and releasing music independently.

8- What's the most punk thing you've seen on tour/in a show?

The gnarliest thing I saw at a punk show was someones earlobe getting ripped off . It was really gross. But let's remember that really, its punk to care

9- The best album of all time and why?

In my opinion, the best album of all time is New Junk Aesthetic by ETID. When i first Bufallo666, it like, awoke something in me.

10- What's the best way to support your band?

The best way to support VW is through our Bandcamp (vaginawitchcraft.bandcamp.com) where you can listen to the album, order merch like CD's Tshirts stickers or digital copies of the album. Follow us on Instagram @vaginawitchcraftband to keep updated with all the new stuff we are going to be working on!

Interview w/ Jennifer "JJ" Leigh ( THE DEVOTCHKAS)

In 1996, three girls from New-York got together to form The Devotchkas . A band that would go on to become one of the most talked about all-girl oï punk of the scene at the time. A time that was long before smartphones and social media, when bands only had web pages on Geocities and Angelfire, which is where we first heard about them. Because in 2001, after Jennifer Leigh, (better known has JJ ) took vocal duties, the band released an iconic album, that was not only our introduction to them, but to how much ass a women can kick when they play badass music. The next year they went on hiatus, and we never heard about them. The whole industry evolved, but for us they remained legendary in their own way.  Fast foward 20 years later, the same line-up that released that iconic album, decided it was time to get back in action. This weekend, the gang is set to play at the C.Y. Fest in Los Angeles, not once, but twice, and even though we can't attend, we couldn't be more exited at the i...
