WITCHES OF THE WEEK #20: CIRCLE NØNE

1- Where is the band from and what's the best thing to do there?

The band is based in London but we're from all over! Egypt, Japan, Ireland and a bit of English between all four of us. Best thing to do in London is to find yourself cheaper rent by some miracle or squat despite the clampdown and many many MANY attempts to stop or ban it entirely. and gigs! London is a real bore without gigs. We're kinda losing the plot during lockdown.

2- What does your band name stand for and what was the runner up?

It means we're not into cliques or going round in circles with anything. I don't think we ever had a runner up..

3- Describe your sound using a movie title.

What We Do In The Shadows

4- What song would describe each member of the band?

Currently...

Seamus is "Blind, Naked and Covered in Shit" (he is most the time to be fair) by Driller Killer.

Lucian is Ruptured Heart Theory by Eyehategod

Amber, who's our new guitarist in the works fingers crossed, is "Numa Numa Yei" by O-Zone, you can almost hear it over her head at all times.

and I'll have to go with Bleach Me by Do One.

5- Name 3 bands who would headline your dream fest?

Headline? hmm. Bad Breeding, Krimewatch and Big Cheese. But that fest ain't gonna run without our friends playing as well! Migraines, Doomsday Clock and Jawless to name a few. Do One! The band not you.

6- Your opinion on being described as "female fronted"?

I hate it. I don't even like being called a female. I think these terms commoditize humans like our organs are an asset or something worth taking advantage of.. It's worse when a punk community abides to those same boxes we worked so hard to remain out of. Same thing with being called a POC band I think. It singles us out like our gender or skin colour are an abnormality or are what makes us different. So unless we're also calling all-male bands "dick-fronted" and white bands .. well .. you kinda can't go about any term here without making them sound like Nazis, so yeah.. you get my point.. people are so desperate to put each other in boxes to make themselves feel special, you're in one box unwillingly so someone else feels better about themselves or you're willingly in another box making a big deal out of a very regular human characteristic.

7- Are you signed on a label and why?

We're not. We've only released a one 5-track demo with our former guitarist Marie. The tracks were recorded slower than our actual sound as well. So we're basically waiting to put out a full-length record of all the new songs we've been working on over the last year, and a few older songs redone, before we get snatched by a DIY record label eventually.

8- What's the most punk thing you've seen on tour/in a show?

In 2015 The Migraines were playing a gig at The Unicorn in Camden and Matty Cabbage on vocals, long time buddeh, took off all his clothes, jumped in the pit and everyone tried crowd surfing him without getting tea-bagged. It all happened in a blink of an eye, was totally impromptu and I couldn't stop laughing.

Another time in 2016 or 17 we were a bunch of folks hanging out in the afterhours at a bar and reggae music was playing all throughout. People were all chill and quiet barely nothing going on. Think someone must've pressed something by accident and music switched to hardcore punk for no more than 20 seconds and back to reggae but within that magical moment everyone collectively got up on pure impulse and flipped their tables or threw away their chairs and went into full mosh pit mode. Was a bit insane and kind of reassuring to know everyone in the room has the same primal urge when it comes to music.

9- The best album of all time and why?

Oh god that's a tough one, I have a best bunch of albums every year! Ones I always go back to are The Complete Anthology by The Germs, it's a go-to whenever I want to tune in or out of practically anything, also any Poison Idea records. Really. Any. I think every record speaks for every mood I can ever summon.

10- What's the best way to support your band?

Until lock down is lifted you can listen to our record on Youtube here https://youtu.be/kpZU_k-ABIU and purchase off Bandcamp here https://circlenone.bandcamp.com/releases

I run a zine called Call In Sick! that you can also buy off of Bandcamp.

And once lockdown is lifted all over the world come to our gigs! Help us book gigs.. We'll be looking for those!

You can follow us on Instagram @circle_none and Facebook @circlenone for all kinds of updates and no dates.

Interview w/ Jennifer "JJ" Leigh ( THE DEVOTCHKAS)

In 1996, three girls from New-York got together to form The Devotchkas . A band that would go on to become one of the most talked about all-girl oï punk of the scene at the time. A time that was long before smartphones and social media, when bands only had web pages on Geocities and Angelfire, which is where we first heard about them. Because in 2001, after Jennifer Leigh, (better known has JJ ) took vocal duties, the band released an iconic album, that was not only our introduction to them, but to how much ass a women can kick when they play badass music. The next year they went on hiatus, and we never heard about them. The whole industry evolved, but for us they remained legendary in their own way.  Fast foward 20 years later, the same line-up that released that iconic album, decided it was time to get back in action. This weekend, the gang is set to play at the C.Y. Fest in Los Angeles, not once, but twice, and even though we can't attend, we couldn't be more exited at the i...

THE PHOTO PASS with MIHAELA PETRESCU

When did you first pick up a camera and what motivated you to start photography? I picked up a camera at around 4 years old. My mom did some photography when i was young, so I grew up with a camera in my hands. Did you study or are you self taught? I studied in cinema/video/communications at Dawson College, then I went to Concordia University in the same field. I never actually studied photography but I had a lot of photo classes. Do you remember the first show you ever shot and how it went? My uncle played in bands since I was really young. The first show I shot was my uncle's first show with his new band. I was around 13 years old. The stress was real! I think I had one of those point and shoot cameras. I also remember my first show for a media; it was Septicflesh at Café Campus. How did you know you wanted to do concert photography and what do you love the most about it? The first concert I ever saw was of Cher . I was maybe 8 or 9 years old and I vividly remember watching the ...
